My weekend was consumed of hearing non-stop about the weather we were going to have Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Everywhere I looked I was hearing about the next snow craziness.  My roommates wanted to get ready for the snow so we spent most of the day shopping and getting our lives in order for the weather. Then we waited. We had bought movies and food to last days, and yet we still waited. My roommates prayed for a snow day, and we waited. I had my camera ready for all our snow adventures, and we waited. Around Sunday night at 8pm I realized we weren't waiting for anything at this point, it was just a joke mother nature was playing on us. I got up early this morning to find out there was snow, but hardly any. But yet all kinds of schools were closed! Not Point Park! http://postgazette.com/pg/10347/1110473-100.stm        Ohhh my life!!!! So above are some photographs of the snow I wish we had! If you have any great snow photographs feel free to post them here.

Weekend Events!

Weekend List!

Human Rights Day Celebration
Shadow Lounge & Ava Lounge
12/10/2010 5:30pm
Experience a night of social awareness, live music and drinks in order to celebrate the progress of human rights in the world, rather than mourning the abuses and negative aspects that are all too often focused upon.

Begun in 1950, Human Rights Day is an annual event at the United Nations recognizing the 1948 Universal Declaration Of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights.

This evening will also highlight the important work that local community organizations are doing to educate the Pittsburgh community and promote human rights around the world.

This event is orgnazied by Global Solutions Pittsburgh, an educational organization that envisions a future in which nations work together to abolish war, protect our rights and freedoms, and solve the problems facing humanity that no nation can solve alone. For more information, (412) 471-7852.

Tickets are $25 each. Proceeds benefit the Merrick Art Gallery, the only art museum located in rural Beaver County and features examples of romantic, realistic and impressionistic art by prominent American and European artists. For more information, call (724) 846-1130.

Yes, Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus Window Displays
Macy's (Downtown)
11/20/2010 through 1/7/2011
Inspired by the holiday TV special, the store's classic windows are decorated with scenes about a child's faith.

The 2009 TV special was a retelling of a popular Christmas story of an 1897 editorial in the New York Sun newspaper answering little Virginia O'Hanlon's question: is there a Santa Claus?

With sets and characters made entirely of paper cut both by hand and
laser, the fusion of artistry and technology come together to tell an
inspiring tale of the holiday season in six new magical window displays.

Photo Spotlight Ideas

Photo Spotlight Ideas

I just wanted to give out some ideas on how to capture a fun moment.
  • Keep your camera on you at all times
  • Keep your camera on you at all times
  • Keep your camera near your body for basically every second of the day.
This is a great tip from my advisor Chris Rolinson. The man is right though, you never know when a prime photo opportunity might come up.

Take this photograph above. My roommates and I were having a poker night, just a regular night that we usually have once a month. I never thought to take a photograph of it or let alone the table. But for some reason I had my camera and took this photograph. This photograph may mean nothing to you, but to me this explains the entire night. It tells the story of our poker night in a nut shell. I love this photograph and have it framed in my room. It is priceless cause I can have another poker night, but nothing will compare to that night.

Here is another example. I ended up going home one weekend and decided to take a photograph of my bedroom door for whatever reason. I didn't think to much of it and didn't for a while after. A couple of months later my mom decided to sell the house, it all happened so quick and I didn't have time to come home and pack my things. So my mom had to take care of packing up my bedroom. This was a project that I started when I was twelve, I would add little things all the time and it had many layers to it. It is something that I thought defined me and was a great way to enter my room. After the move though a lot of these things got lost, so now I at least have a photograph of it. I loved that door!

So tip is to always have your photograph. You never know what you will see that day. It is always a good idea to capture the moment as you see it and want to remember it. Feel free to post any tips or ideas you have!

Spotlight Photographer

Lynn Johnson

Lynn Johnson worked at the Pittsburgh Press for seven years and has moved on to an amazing photographer and has even had work published in National Geographic.  Below is her Bio from her website.

Photojournalist Lynn Johnson is known for her intense, sensitive work.
Dividing her time between assignments for National Geographic and various foundations, Johnson has traveled from Siberia to Zambia and photographed celebrities including Tiger Woods, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Mister Rogers and the entire Supreme Court. With her Leicas, she has climbed the radio antenna atop Chicago's Hancock Tower and dangled from helicopters in Antarctica. Yet her favorite assignments have been emotionally demanding stories about ordinary people; a family struggling with AIDS (Life), the death of an African-American coach in Amish country (Sports Illustrated), native Hawaiians who protect traditional ways (NG), the impact of zoonotic diseases around the world (NG).

Her vision is subtle. She invites the viewer to find the meaning in the frame. Her shooting style is equally low key allowing her subjects to reveal themselves to the camera. The photographs she strives for are compassionate. After 30 years of practicing photography, she sees her personal work moving from that of an observer to advocate.

She has done amazing work all over the world and I admire her for making her start here in pittsburgh. She has really proven herself and made a name for all her talents.

Check out her website http://www.lynnjohnsonphoto.com
Especially her piece on Hawaii and Natural Medicine.

Photography Books

Must have Photography Books.

http://www.jasonbellphoto.com/#/home/
 Jason Bell
This photographer is really awesome because if you explore  he's landscape portfolio you will find some of the most amazing photographs. Jason uses natural light to help make each photograph as dramatic as possible. I enjoy pictures like that and his use of color for each photograph really blew me away. Each photograph I looked at made me want to go to that place. He really draws a viewer in and uses his ability to capture a great landscape to his advantage. I also really enjoy his books. I think he presents a great topic that is interesting. Check out An Englishman in New York, I highly recommend it.

http://www.levonbiss.com/
Levon Biss
Levon Biss is mainly a sports photographer, but the images he produces can tell an amazing story. He has a book called One Love soccer for life. Being a huge soccer fan I love this book. The images inside depict how people around the world see soccer. It is really amazing how he captured that exact feeling that every soccer player feels when playing or seeing the sport. I truly admire his work and edginess in the industry.

http://www.timflach.com/

Tim Flach
Tim Flach is awesome at catching motion. Amazing photographs of dogs! Flach is amazing at what he does. I don't really know what else to say about this guy except that he amazing at what he does. He captures an attitude about a dog that only true dog lovers can see. He shows the real personality behind all that fur and shows the true dog.

These three books are must reads! I highly recommend them all to you for Christmas!

    on Dipity.

    First day of December!

     December 1st!

It's the first day of December! Christmas is just around the corner and the decorations are quickly going up around my house!

With the holidays right around the corner now is a great time to document the process! I put my Christmas tree last night and I made sure I documented the play by play. I will put up the slide show later this week when the whole process is complete.

This is a great time to get some holiday photographs around the city as well. Everyone and everywhere has some kind of holiday decorations up, so get out and explore the city for various photographs.

Here are a couple of places I know get a little crazy for the holidays. Check out there websites for more information on cost and location.

So get out there and check out a few places that are taking Christmas to a new level. Feel free to post what you come up with or comment about some of your favorite Christmas places in Pittsburgh.

    Recap of the Weekend

    Light Up Night Recap

Awesome turn out at Light Up Night. I really enjoyed every aspect of the night. The night had so many photographic moments it was almost overwhelming. The night had gingerbread houses, reindeer, and ice skaters. I couldn't have asked for a more fun filled and packed night.

Feel free to post your thoughts on the night and add photos!!

    Photo Spotlight

    Winter Garden

I love PPG's Winter Garden. I honestly can't get enough of it. Even when its not in season I am in there having lunch with my friends. But for the Holidays they out do themselves. Here are a couple of gingerbread houses that were built for the holidays.

Feel free to post your gingerbread houses on here!

    Santa's of the World

    Highlights from the Winter Garden.

Like I have mentioned a couple of times before I love the PPG winter garden. During the Christmas holiday they display figures of the Santa's from around the world. This is awesome because its a filled with facts about each Santa and gives a depiction of what they look like. For people that live here and see this every year this might be old news, but for some reason I love it each and every Christmas season.  For these photographs I tried to mess around with things. I used the light to dramatically depict each Santa in a different way. I also tried to get different angles for each one. Try out some of these options and let me know what you come up with. So get over to the winter garden and let me know what you think.

Feel free to post your own photographs or comment on the ones above.

    FOOD!

With Thanksgiving coming up I thought it would fun to photograph some food! I love food with the deepest passion! So photographing it always seems like the best idea to me. I will most likely be posting a lot of photographs that involve food in the next couple of weeks.

The best way to photograph food I think is to get close. Get as close as you can to whatever it is and show the details of everything.

Also photograph people eating the food, especially kids. This will make the food look even better and show the fun side of the food.

Also photograph the whoever made the food if you can. Especially if they are in the kitchen this will make an interesting portrait.

Embrace the color of different foods. This will draw the viewer into the photograph.

Here are a few people taking some really great food photographs.

This is a popular trail that offers a unique view of various city bridges, landmarks, and views of downtown. This Eliza Furnace Trail begins at the parking lot on Swineburne Street, following the former alignment of the once heavily traveled Baltimore and Ohio rail line. Its eastern end connects to the Panther Hollow Trail (which leads to Schenley Park), and its western end will eventually connect to Point State Park.

Not only is this a great place to take photographs of the river, people biking  or just people in general. It has fantastic graffiti along portions of the trail. It creates a great urban jungle feel that would make great back drops for portraits.

    Focus In

    Dogs

This is Syd a friend's dog. She is a crazy character who loves the camera and having her photo taken. The crazy part about Syd is that she is blind. She hears the shutter of the camera she comes running. She is a model at heart.

Dogs are great to photograph because you never know what they will do next. It keeps the photographs interesting and fun. It also makes an easy and fun project.

With Syd I made sure I got close, she is a small dog but I wanted to make her look big in her small world.  I also wanted to use natural colors with her. Her fur is a light brown so I didn't  want to draw to much attention away from her.

I also didn't interfere with anything she was doing. I just followed her around on my hands in knees.

Here are a few other people who love photographing Dogs.

    Get out of Pittsburgh

    Hello Philadelphia!

    http://www.ams-net.org/philadelphia/
I'm leaving for Philadelphia in less then 24 hours. My camera batteries are charging as I type and I'm planning on using every memory card I have.

Everyone needs a break from the same stuff everyday, so my suggestion is get out of Pittsburgh whenever you can.

Take a small trip out of the area and photograph everything you can. It will get your creative juices flowing and give you a great chance to discover some great places outside of Pittsburgh.

I'm orginally from around that area so I will be familiar with everything, but I haven't been back in over a year. This is also a great benifit to my photographs I will be taking because I will want to remember everything I do.

I will be posting some photographs some time next week. I will try and post while I am there to show you some of the images I come across.

Make sure you embrace the city every time you leave and when you return. Just have fun with your camera!

    Phipps Conservatory

Like I mentioned before I went to Phipps over the weekend, which was awesome!

Here is a slide show of what I came across at Phipps.  Feel free to go to Phipps and take your own photos and post them here.

    Weekend Review

    Phipps Conservatory

Everyone has to get over to Phipps Conservatory!!! I have never been there and honestly I could have spent the entire day there. It is one of the greatest places to photograph I think in Pittsburgh.

For starters every room has small details that could make a picture. It is also filled with such a variety of people that it all just really worked.

As a tip I would say get up close to everything and use the lighting in there to your advantage.

Also don't just visit Phipps once a year, each season holds something different.  They also have exhibits and special events that appeal to everyone.

They even sometimes have live music like Chatham Baroque. Check them out they were a great surprise to my first visit to Phipps.

I will be posting a couple of slide shows from Phipps and other events this weekend later this week. So be sure to check back!

    Halloween Hotspots
